Buying a heat press gets complicated fast. These are the questions printers ask most often when they are trying to choose the right machine for a shop, side business, or growing apparel operation. The right press depends on how you actually plan to use it.
There is no single heat press that is perfect for every printer. Garment size, transfer type, production volume, available space, workflow, and budget all matter. After more than 12 years in apparel printing, we have learned that the best buying decision usually comes from understanding the job first and the machine second.
01What size heat press should I buy?

For apparel production, a full-size press gives you more flexibility. A 16 × 20 inch platen can handle most standard front and back shirt graphics without forcing you to press a large transfer in sections. Smaller presses can work well for compact designs, youth garments, sleeves, or limited workspace, but they can become restrictive as your jobs get larger.
Both the Alien Press AP1 and AP2 use a 16 × 20 platen because that size gives a production shop room to handle a wide range of apparel work.
02Is a 15 × 15 or 16 × 20 heat press better?

A 15 × 15 press can be perfectly capable for smaller designs and lower-volume work. A 16 × 20 press gives you more usable pressing area and more flexibility for oversized artwork, adult garments, back prints, and production jobs.
If you expect your business to grow, we generally prefer having the larger platen available rather than discovering later that your press is the limiting factor.
03What type of heat press is best: clamshell, swing-away, or automatic?

Each style solves a different workflow problem. A clamshell opens upward and keeps the footprint compact. A swing-away moves the upper platen away from the loading area, giving you more open access to the garment. An automatic press can reduce repetitive opening and closing work during production.
The AP2 uses a clamshell layout with automatic release. The AP1 uses an electric automatic swing-away design. The better choice comes down to your workspace, production volume, and how much open loading access you want.
04What should I look for when buying a heat press?

Start with the fundamentals: consistent heat, even pressure, a platen size that fits your work, controls that are easy to understand, and a machine that feels stable in production. Then look at workflow features such as slide-out platens, automatic release, interchangeable platens, or automatic operation.
We also put a lot of weight on serviceability and support. A feature list does not mean much if the machine becomes difficult to maintain or there is nobody to help when something eventually needs attention.
05How much should I spend on a heat press?

Spend based on the work the press needs to perform, not simply the logo on the machine or the lowest price you can find. A hobby press that runs a few shirts per month has a different job than a production press that may be cycled throughout the day.
Look at the total value: construction, usable platen size, heat and pressure consistency, workflow, warranty, replacement parts, and support. 06Are cheap heat presses worth buying?

Sometimes a low-cost press can be enough for occasional hobby use. The problem appears when a machine with inconsistent heat, uneven pressure, weak components, or poor support becomes part of a business workflow.
A failed shirt, re-pressed transfer, delayed order, or machine that is difficult to service has a cost too. For business use, we would rather buy around dependable production value than chase the absolute lowest purchase price.
07Do I need an automatic heat press for a T-shirt business?

No. Plenty of successful shops use manual presses. Automation becomes more valuable as production volume increases because reducing repetitive operator steps can make the workflow easier and more consistent.
If you want electric automatic operation, the AP1 is built around that workflow. If you prefer a traditional clamshell action but still want the press to release at the end of the cycle, the AP2 uses automatic release.
08Can one heat press be used for DTF, HTV, sublimation, and screen print transfers?

A quality flat heat press can be used with many heat-applied decorating processes, including DTF transfers, heat transfer vinyl, sublimation-compatible products, and many screen printed transfers. The important part is following the specific time, temperature, pressure, and peeling instructions supplied for the transfer and garment you are using.
Not every substrate is flat or uses the same platen shape. Hats, for example, are better handled with a purpose-built curved cap press such as the Alien Press Hat Heat Press.
09How important are even heat and pressure in a heat press?

They are two of the most important parts of the machine. Heat-applied products are designed around a target application process. If one area of the platen is significantly cooler or receives less pressure than another, the transfer may not apply consistently across the design.
That is why we focus less on gimmicks and more on whether a press can repeatedly perform the basic job it was built to do.
10What warranty and support should I look for when buying a heat press?

Read beyond the word “warranty.” Find out what is actually covered, for how long, whether replacement parts are available, and what happens if the machine needs service after the initial warranty period.
